There are some wedding venues that feel designed more for appearances than actual experiences. Giant ballrooms. Massive chandeliers. Marble everywhere. Spaces that look impressive for about five minutes, until you realize you’re sharing the property with three other weddings while your guests are trying to figure out which cocktail hour they accidentally wandered into.
David’s Country Inn feels like the complete opposite of that.
Tucked right along Main Street in Hackettstown, New Jersey, David’s Country Inn is the kind of venue couples tend to fall in love with unexpectedly. Especially couples who weren’t originally looking for a “wedding factory” experience in the first place. The venue itself is a restored Victorian mansion that has stood for over 150 years, and unlike many venues that simply borrow vintage aesthetics for branding purposes, this place actually feels lived in. Warm wood. Historic architecture. Original details. Slight imperfections in all the right places. The kind of space that immediately feels welcoming instead of intimidating.
As wedding photographers, we noticed it the very first time we stepped onto the property. There’s a certain charm to the venue that’s difficult to fake. From the original bar in the cocktail space to the staircases leading upstairs, there are layers of texture and character everywhere you look. It doesn’t feel overly polished or sterile. It feels real. And honestly, that tends to attract a very specific kind of couple too.
The couples who book David’s Country Inn usually care less about impressing strangers and more about creating a wedding day that actually feels enjoyable to be part of. They want their guests talking, laughing, eating, dancing, and staying present instead of spending the entire day bouncing between staged photo moments. Many of our Pearl Paper Studio couples gravitate toward venues like this because there’s an intimacy to the experience. The mansion is exclusively yours for the day, which completely changes the atmosphere. Instead of feeling like you’re being shuffled through a wedding venue assembly line, the day feels personal. Comfortable. Relaxed.
And ironically, those are usually the weddings that end up photographing the best anyway.
One of the things we love most about photographing weddings at David’s Country Inn is how naturally the venue supports the flow of the day. You don’t need to force the experience here. The spaces transition well. Guests remain connected to the celebration. The grounds are beautiful without requiring endless walking or complicated logistics. And because so much visual interest already exists throughout the property, couples can spend less time disappearing for photos and more time actually being present at their wedding.
Which, in our opinion, is kind of the whole point.

Exclusive use of the entire property
One of the biggest reasons couples gravitate toward David’s Country Inn is surprisingly simple: your wedding actually feels like your wedding.
In a state filled with massive banquet halls hosting multiple events simultaneously, there’s something refreshing about having a venue entirely to yourself. No shared cocktail hours. No awkward run-ins with another bride in the parking lot. No guests accidentally wandering into the wrong ballroom because six weddings are happening at the same time. At David’s Country Inn, the entire mansion and grounds are exclusively yours for the day, which completely changes the energy of the experience. Couples can move freely throughout the property without constantly being redirected or rushed along, and guests naturally settle into the celebration instead of feeling shuffled around on a timeline conveyor belt.
Historic character without feeling outdated
A lot of venues claim to have “character.” David’s Country Inn actually does.
Originally built in the 1840s, the property still retains so many of the details that give older spaces their warmth and personality, while thoughtfully incorporating modern updates that make the venue feel elevated instead of dated. The current owners have done an incredible job preserving the original charm of the mansion while continuing to improve the guest experience over the years. From the restored architectural details throughout the building to the outdoor lounge area strung with café lights, the venue feels intentionally designed without losing its soul.
More recently, the ballroom renovation added updated hardwood floors and crystal chandeliers while still keeping with the historic aesthetic of the property. It’s one of the things couples love most about the venue; it feels elegant without feeling overly formal or intimidating.
The food and hospitality are genuinely memorable
We know every venue says their food is amazing.
But David’s Country Inn is one of those places where guests actually continue talking about it afterward.
The cocktail hour is consistently strong, dinner service runs smoothly, and the staff does an incredible job keeping the day organized without making things feel overly rigid or robotic. That balance matters more than most couples realize during wedding planning. Great hospitality sets the tone for the entire experience, and this team has a way of making guests feel genuinely welcomed instead of processed through a system.
Honestly, one of the reasons we enjoy working here so much is because the staff cares deeply about the overall experience, which makes the entire wedding day run more naturally for everyone involved.
Comfortable, convenient, and low-stress logistics
One of the underrated advantages of David’s Country Inn is simply how easy the venue makes the day feel.
Couples can get ready on site, which dramatically simplifies logistics and reduces unnecessary travel stress throughout the morning. Their Warren Suite is especially helpful for larger wedding parties and families because there’s actually room to spread out comfortably. Between the kitchenette, dining area, lounge spaces, and even the shuffleboard table, it feels less like a cramped bridal suite and more like a place where people can genuinely relax before the ceremony begins.
And honestly, that relaxed energy tends to carry into the rest of the wedding day too.
Less commuting. Less chaos. Less unnecessary stress.
More time actually enjoying your wedding.
The entire wedding day can flow naturally in one place
As wedding photographers, we’re completely used to bouncing between houses, churches, parks, hotels, venues, random side streets, and occasionally somebody’s aunt’s backyard because “the light is prettier there.”
But there’s something incredibly nice about a wedding day where everything simply flows.
One of the biggest advantages of David’s Country Inn is that the majority of the day can comfortably happen in one location. Couples can get ready on site, host the ceremony outdoors, transition directly into cocktail hour and reception, and still have plenty of beautiful locations for portraits throughout the day without needing to constantly load into cars and relocate everyone every few hours.
From a photography standpoint, this means less time dealing with logistics and more time actually documenting the experience. More candid moments. More reactions. More time with family and friends. More opportunities for the day to unfold naturally instead of feeling rushed from location to location.
And honestly, couples tend to feel the difference too.
Beautiful photo opportunities no matter what the weather does
A lot of wedding venues photograph beautifully on perfect 72-degree sunny days.
The problem is…New Jersey weather rarely asks for permission first.
One of the reasons we genuinely enjoy working at David’s Country Inn is because the venue gives us flexibility regardless of the season or forecast. Yes, the outdoor ceremony area and grounds are beautiful. Yes, the landscaping and exterior spaces photograph wonderfully during golden hour. But what we appreciate most is that the venue still works exceptionally well when conditions outside are less than ideal.
Inside the mansion, there are layers of texture, warmth, architectural detail, and natural character almost everywhere you turn. Historic staircases. Original fixtures. Cozy pockets of window light. Rich wood tones. Intimate corners that naturally lend themselves to more documentary-style imagery instead of overly posed portraits. Couples never feel trapped by the weather here because there are genuinely strong indoor options throughout the property.
Which is honestly a huge relief for everyone involved when the forecast suddenly decides to become “creative.”
Exclusive access makes the experience feel relaxed
David's Country Inn only hosts one wedding a time. This means you won't have to coordinate with other couples for the prime photo locations around the property.
The couples who book this venue are usually our kind of people
Over the years, we’ve noticed there’s a very specific kind of couple that tends to gravitate toward David’s Country Inn.
They’re usually thoughtful, low-key, family-oriented people who care far more about creating a warm experience than putting on a performance. They want beautiful photos, absolutely. But they’re not trying to spend their entire wedding day manufacturing content for the internet. They care about the people in the room. The atmosphere. The conversations. The feeling of the day.
And honestly, that mindset tends to photograph incredibly well.
Many of our Pearl Paper Studio couples connect naturally with venues like David’s Country Inn because the priorities align so closely with how we approach weddings too. We’re drawn to genuine moments, emotional reactions, real interactions, and the small in-between moments that actually define what the day felt like. So when couples trust the experience, stay present, and focus on enjoying their wedding instead of over-curating it, everything tends to come together naturally.
Those are always some of our favorite weddings to document.
Loving what you see so far?
Here are some of my fave photo spots when my couples get married at David's Country Inn
Outdoor ceremony space.
Weather permitting, you definitely do not want to miss the large open space out back (which will likely serve as your ceremony space). If you're planning on doing outdoor group photos, this location is not only convenient, but also perfectly lit by the sun in the afternoon. In the evenings, the cafe string lights overhead create the perfect, romantic backdrop for your nighttime photos. Just let us know you want that photo, and we'll be more than happy to oblige :).
Ivy wall.
Next to the outdoor ceremony space, this is also a favorite for many of our couples. How can anyone say no to all that greenery? Add in those gorgeous french doors, and leading lines, this cute spot is perfect for first looks and family portraits. Need a bird's eye view of your first look? This is where a 2nd photographer comes in handy (which you'll always have, when you Pearl Paper Studio on board!).
Front porch.
If the sun's a little too much for folks, this covered porch provides a welcome respite from the heat (or wind, or rain, for that matter). Looking for that historic, timeless charm? This is where you'll get it.
Warren Suite
This is where you'll likely be getting ready as well. With the shuffleboard, library and bar - there are a wealth of location options in these rooms. And best yet? There will be no shortage of natural light here!
Bar room
In the room next to the foyer, you're going to encounter one of the most gorgeous bar counters you've ever seen. We've been told that the antique cash register still works! For obvious reasons, many couples like to feature this bar counter as the backdrop for their photos. And if you're looking for some additional color, there are some stained glass windows that your photographer can possibly use for some funky, creative portraits!

Want the best photos at David's Country Inn? Then you'll want to read this!
The sun will rule the day. Why? Because the sun's position is going to determine how we're going to photograph your group photos and portraits. Nobody likes squinty photos, or hot-spots on grandma in your official family photos. When in doubt, just follow our lead - we'll know exactly where to take you and your guests, regardless of what the sun may throw at us :).
Doing a first look? You'll want to wrap your photos up with time to spare. And the reason for this is because your guests will be parking for the rear, and will likely congregate in the outdoor lounge area in full view of the ceremony area AND the ivy wall (both of which will likely be your primary photo locations). If you're trying to avoid guests, start your photo sessions at these two outdoor locations, then wrap up with indoor photos. Don't worry - there are plenty of great photo spots inside as well!
Shooting indoors will require a bit of experience & skill. In the event of inclement weather on your wedding day, your default photo option will be shooting indoors, and here's the cold honest truth: not all photographers excel at shooting indoors, neither with window light nor with artificial lights. And while this wedding venue does offer many compositional gifts, both indoors and outdoors, it would require a skilled & experienced photographer in order to take advantage of all of it. When in doubt, asked to see some portfolio for some rainy day weddings at David's Country Inn.

If you are currently engaged and looking for a wedding photographer to help document one of the most amazing days in your lives, I would love to hear your plans and seeing what we can do to be a part of them!
