The thing we couldn’t stop thinking about while editing Samantha and Vincent’s wedding was how many completely unnecessary things made it into the day.
We mean that as a compliment.
There was a dog on the cake. Not a real dog, which would have created several logistical issues, but a small black dog figurine accompanied by a framed photo nearby. There were socks featuring Einstein and hot sauce bottles. There was a custom neon sign reading “The Lembas,” which undoubtedly means something very specific to the people who know them and almost certainly required an explanation for everyone else. There was a live painter quietly documenting the celebration from one corner of the room. There was a cigar bar. There was enough dessert to suggest someone in the planning process viewed restraint as more of a recommendation than a rule. Later in the evening, there was pizza. Looking back, the wedding felt like a collection of things that probably wouldn’t survive a focus group but somehow worked perfectly together because they all belonged to the same two people.
That’s what made the day feel different. Nothing seemed to have been chosen because it was what a wedding was supposed to have. Everything felt like it had been pulled from their actual life and simply relocated to Rock Island Lake Club for the day. The dog mattered, so the dog was there. Loved ones who couldn’t be there still had a place in the room through the memorial display. The inside jokes came. The family stories came. The friends came. Even the bridesmaids watching the first look from the porch felt like part of the same pattern. Nobody seemed particularly interested in staying inside the boundaries of their assigned role. They wanted to be part of it. They wanted to watch. They wanted to witness things as they happened.
We’ve noticed that some weddings feel carefully edited. Every decision is filtered through a question of whether it fits the vision. Samantha and Vincent’s wedding felt more like it was filtered through a different question: does this belong in our life? If the answer was yes, it got invited. The result was a wedding that felt remarkably lived-in. Guests bundled up by the lake for a March ceremony because that’s where the ceremony was going to happen. Kids ended up on the dance floor because that’s where the fun was happening. Guests drifted between the painter, the desserts, the cigars, and the conversations they were in no rush to leave. Nobody seemed overly concerned with creating a perfect wedding-day image. They seemed much more interested in enjoying themselves.
Months from now, most guests probably won’t remember the exact floral arrangements or what was served during dinner. They will remember the dog on the cake. They’ll remember the pizza. They’ll remember laughing at somebody’s socks. They’ll remember gathering around a painting that slowly became a wedding. Most of all, they’ll remember that the wedding felt unmistakably like Samantha and Vincent. In an industry that spends a lot of time telling couples what a wedding should look like, there was something refreshing about watching two people build a celebration out of the things they actually cared about and trusting that would be enough. As it turns out, it was.
