We’ll admit it: winter weddings have always had a special place in our hearts.
Maybe it’s the candlelight. Maybe it’s the fashion. Maybe it’s the possibility of stepping outside and finding the whole world covered in fresh snow. There’s just something about a winter wedding that feels a little more intimate, a little more romantic, and completely different from every other time of year.
And while spring, summer and fall tend to get most of the attention, winter comes with some pretty incredible advantages that couples don’t always think about. After photographing weddings in New Jersey and New York for nearly two decades, we think winter weddings deserve a little more love.
Here are a few reasons why.

Your wedding doesn’t have to compete with everyone’s summer plans.
Summer calendars fill up fast. Between vacations, shore weekends, graduations, family trips, barbecues, kids’ activities and, of course, other weddings, your guests may already be juggling several commitments before your invitation even arrives.
Winter is different. Once the holidays are over, there are fewer weekends everyone is trying to protect. A January or February wedding isn’t competing with someone’s beach vacation or long-planned summer getaway. Instead, your wedding can become the thing everyone is actually looking forward to.
And honestly, by the middle of winter, who couldn’t use a reason to get dressed up, see some friends, eat a great meal, have a few drinks and dance all night?

Your wedding budget simply goes further in the winter.
Winter is considered off-season for a reason. With fewer weddings competing for the same dates, many venues and vendors offer lower minimums, off-season pricing, added incentives or simply more flexibility than they might during peak wedding season.
That doesn’t mean you have to spend less. It means the same budget can buy you more wedding. Maybe that means upgrading the menu, adding the raw bar, bringing in the band you really wanted, going bigger with the florals or putting more behind the guest experience. Or maybe you get exactly the wedding you wanted and simply keep a little more money in the bank.
There are exceptions, of course. Christmas and New Year’s can command premium pricing from some venues and vendors. But outside of those high-demand dates, winter can be one of those rare opportunities to get more out of the budget you were already planning to spend.

Winter can give you photos no other season can.
There are beautiful wedding photos in every season. But there are some photos you can only make in the winter. Fresh snow falling around you. A completely white landscape. Snow-covered trees and rooftops. That magical, larger-than-life snow globe look isn’t something you can recreate in June.
And unlike rain, which can derail the outdoor plans you were hoping for, a little snow can actually make the day feel more special. You can’t schedule it, you certainly can’t guarantee it, but if you’re lucky enough to wake up to fresh snow on your wedding day? Grab your coat. We’re going outside.
